As Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Viral Photo Shows Beach Patrol Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, views the famous beach as her personal space. On that fateful weekend night, she, along with numerous others in the area, noticed loud noises reverberating around the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces on display told her something was wrong.

As she stood on the street, talking to a duo who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she became aware of someone moving up from behind. It was a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one running in the path that everyone was trying to escape from, carrying that large equipment and without footwear … He was sprinting at something that surely every part of you would signal you to run in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just completely full throttle sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Courage Amidst Crisis

The image Ching captured of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many acts of heroism in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, officers and paramedics caring for many the injured.

Collective Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the location of the attack becoming a makeshift hospital. Accounts show that other team members were also seen taking action, such as entering the ocean to rescue people in distress.

After the attack, statements of support were shared. An online statement conveyed gratitude for the responders who demonstrated that “compassion will always conquer darkness”.

The group of beach patrol published a statement, noting they were “processing what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful messages and support. We are touched by the compassion shown towards our team,” the organization stated. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it helps those impacted.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional lifeguards, said that the team performed exceptionally from the second the incident commenced until late that evening.

“We have heard so many powerful accounts, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is incredible,” said a local official.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic shores secure for visitors, but what we saw on Sunday should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and grapple with the horror of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much light we have seen in the presence of such darkness.”
