AI-generated pictures claiming to depict Nicolás Maduro detained following his capture by the US have amassed many millions of impressions online.
The Way AI Images of Maduro Surfaced Rapidly
Initial inauthentic synthetic picture seemingly showing him being escorted off a plane emerged shortly after. This image was unpublished by any authoritative government accounts; it was instead posted on X by an account purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
We’ve checked Google’s SynthID, which found the picture was generated or edited with generative AI.
More AI-generated images began to spread in the following hours, seemingly depicting additional perspectives of Maduro in custody. Visible identifying marks on these pictures show they were posted by an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
AI analysis indicates the further images were similarly produced using AI technology.
Authentic Image Posted but Fakes Continued
