Warning: Spoilers for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a look back discloses that popular character Alastor the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his human life. Being aware he was headed to the underworld, he established communication with the afterlife beforehand to secure a powerful role there. Rosie, the charismatic leader the cannibal faction in Hell, promised Alastor he would become “the strongest Sinner in Hell” in exchange for his eternal spirit.
This prompts an important query: How is Rosie powerful enough to elevate Alastor above all other Demonic Sinners?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the initial building block in a much bigger story that involves so much, moving into season 3,” the showrunner explains. “Clearly that is a perfect question: How is she that powerful? The answer might be various factors, but the revelation is in season 3. I am thrilled for people to witness it.”
It is uncertain how long viewers will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The production companies have approved the third and fourth seasons, but the creator frequently notes that animated production is a time-consuming endeavor, and subsequent seasons have no release dates yet. Still, she states holding off on specific information is a crucial aspect of maintaining season 2’s focus in the right places.
“The difficulty of any agreement with demons, or stories that have enigmas, is giving people just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that as we go, and allowing that be satisfying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”
Mysteries Resolved in Season 3
The showrunner assures that the upcoming season will address the queries fans have been asking, such as why the cannibal leader commanded Alastor to disappear for seven years, which weakened his influence in the infernal realm.
“The entire seven-year span, and the pacts these humans are doing, and everything — it's feeding into a larger story,” she says.
Meanwhile, the origin story episode offers another glimpse into what the main characters of Demonic Sinners looked like as humans, following after viewing Sir Pentious’ Victorian-era mortal appearance in episode 2. The creator says that significant consideration went into the visual creation of these forms.
“The mortal forms of these personas carry so much weight,” she notes. “They range from looking really different from their infernal version to seeming almost identical. With Pentious, the initial design we see, there was some internal discussion within the team between going with a design that symbolizes the character, as opposed to selecting something that's historically correct. We leaned toward making a design that just seemed like it was him.”
She says the biggest debate over Pentious’ human design was his long hair: “We were like, ‘Nobody typically had extended hair of that style in Victorian-era London.’ But at the same time, we think the silhouette is so important, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We sort of provided the rationale that he lived in seclusion, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there's always a way. As we create the mortal forms of these personas […] it's such a fun thing to explore and determine. I'm excited for fans to view additional of what the human forms look like.”
