The Fianna Fáil nominee withdrew from Ireland's presidential race less than three weeks before polling day

Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin stated he is withdrawing from the Irish presidential election immediately.

He was poised to be one of three candidates standing for the Irish presidency, together with Independent candidate Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

Nonetheless, on Sunday evening he said through a declaration that he "erred that was not in keeping with my character and the standards he upholds."

"Considering all these factors, I've resolved to exit the election for president right away and go back to my family," he stated in a statement.

Further updates expected.
