Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Drop Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to Your World
The seasonal game drop for the block-building phenomenon has landed β and it features the initial fresh armament introduced into the title since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is now available and it might just revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, especially if you love chaos.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mounts of Mayhem update also introduces a host of fresh elements and enhancements focused on animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the development team had already known it was time for a new weapon.
"From the outset, we understood that we desired a new weapon that would increase combat distance, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," stated a senior product manager. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the lance was the one that both played wonderfully when we ran our trials and also made sense for the intended purpose."
If you're asking yourself whether fighting from a saddle means you can tilt at your friends on horseback, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack ideally crafted for it.
"[Jousting on horses is a major use cases for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the developer continues. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you lower your spear and get increased harm [with] the more momentum you have. So [itβs] perfect for mounted duels."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The unruly pleasure isn't limited to there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] perfect for strapping on the wings and flying forth and making some real mayhem," she teases.
In other words: Aerial lance combat is now real, and it deserves to be an competitive event without delay.
Another key feature in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This aquatic being, which is inspired by the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be tamed and mounted for underwater travel. Not only will it move you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also conserve your oxygen levels, so there's no necessity to return to the surface for oxygen.
The other inclusions are mostly things that are out to get you, as is the way of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, often with a Drowned on its back. If you manage to defeat the Drowned, though, you can tame the zombie Nautilus β or the standard version, for that matter β with a blowfish.
"We've pondered this challenge on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the perfect moment to also introduce something for underwater," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a number of concepts for underwater mounts that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus concept art looked striking, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."
She also adds that there are actually two distinct kinds of undead nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you find underwater."
Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks
Further inclusions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you find yourself in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their bones protruding. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a similar rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some much-anticipated adjustments to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford waterways while atop a horse. Furthermore, high-tier barding is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it deserves.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
In summary, the final game drop of the year is a notable addition. The spear by itself β and the potential for chaos β would have seemed like a major improvement. Combine that with the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.
The Mayhem Mounts content drop is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
