James Comey court appearance
Comey has maintained his clean record about the allegations

Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to US legislators and impeding a congressional proceeding.

The former director's lawyer entered the plea acting as his counsel in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

His attorney declared he would seek to have the legal matter thrown out for several factors including that his the accused, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was indicted shortly after Donald Trump pushed his top legal official to take action against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald told the judge they intended to present multiple petitions to terminate the case before a trial, arguing the government's case was vindictive and that a government lawyer was improperly appointed to assume control of the case.

The former director's proceedings was first handled by the original attorney, who left his position under influence from Donald Trump after his examination into an additional political adversary - the New York official - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

The former director appeared in good spirits as he walked into the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was supported by his partner, Patrice Failor and offspring Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the previous administration recently fired.

Following the reading to the magistrate read his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on mid-week, James Comey was inquired if he grasped the allegations.

"I do your honour. Thank you very much," he told the judge.

Previous Events

James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about four months into the former president's initial presidency as president. At the period, the director was overseeing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, James Comey triggered a backlash from the Democratic party when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was examining presidential nominee Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, leading to negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors allege the former director provided false information to the legislature during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he provided false information to the legislative body by claiming he had not permitted an individual at the FBI to release to media organizations information about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also accuse Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to influence, block and slow" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

Through a recording Mr Comey shared to his Instagram after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and accused the former president of behaving like a "tyrant".

"My family and I have been aware for considerable time that there are consequences to opposing Mr Trump," he commented. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

The accusations against Mr Comey surfaced after the former president posted on social media demanding his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and additional individuals.
