Suspect Taken into Custody After a Minimum of 50 Rounds Discharged from Sydney Residence
A male suspect aged 60 is now in police custody after at least one person was shot, multiple individuals harmed and several automobiles targeted by gunfire by a gunman in the Croydon Park area.
As many as 100 shots were fired during a two-hour period from 7:45 PM to 9:30 PM Sunday evening in the suburb of Croydon Park.
Law Enforcement Initiate Substantial Action
Roads were shut down and the vicinity was secured under lockdown following the start of a significant police operation in response to information a suspect was haphazardly discharging a weapon at motorists, encompassing law enforcement automobiles, moving along Georges River Road.
The tactical police unit were deployed to detain the male suspect aged 60 from an apartment situated over a shop on the heavily trafficked street.
Police Leadership Give Information
Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry informed the press on Sunday night precise figures were not available about the precise count of bullets let off “but there could have been anywhere between 50 and 100 shots that have been discharged”.
He said several automobiles and properties were hit by bullets and incurred damage during the incident, though a more detailed understanding was expected to emerge by morning.
Parry indicated the area was made safe “promptly” and commended the participating police.

Top Officer Describes Alarming Situation
The NSW police commissioner, Mal Lanyon remarked body-worn cameras from police demonstrated the proximity of officers to being struck as they took cover throughout the "grave and frightening event".
“You can hear a multitude of firearm discharges, and certainly impact, nearby the recording device,” Lanyon stated to radio station 2GB in Sydney on Monday morning.
An officer who was fired upon had only been out of the academy for five weeks, Lanyon noted.
The motivation for the gunfire was yet to be determined though Lanyon stated there was no known link with terrorist or gang-related actions.
Harm and Consequences
Ambulance crews cared for sixteen individuals at the scene with non-life-threatening harm.
- A number sustained injuries due to flying glass fragments after their vehicle windows were shot.
- Others were treated for shock.
A number of people were admitted to medical facilities subsequent to emergency medical attention.
A taxi driver aged in his fifties was in a serious but stable condition suffering from injuries to his neck and head.
Rare Incident for the Region
It came down to chance that more people weren’t hurt, the acting assistant commissioner Trent King commented.
“It’s unprecedented for Sydney to experience an incident of this nature, with such a large number of shots fired,” he stated to radio broadcaster ABC during Monday.
“It is very fortunate that further destruction was avoided and undoubtedly more injuries or even deaths.”
King said it would have been terrifying for the general public and responding police officers.
“To clarify those initial police were fired upon. Our police cars have been damaged and we’re very fortunate that no police have been injured.”
Suspect in Custody
The individual in his sixties was under police custody at Bankstown hospital and was expected to be questioned and officially charged during Monday.
Weapons, among them a high-caliber rifle, were taken into custody upon his detention, authorities claimed.
Witness Report
A person present during the gunfire reported to the ABC he was driving by and “detected multiple banging sounds on the taxi's left flank”.
“Then, I observed adjacent to me, and I saw a couple of holes through the window right next to – on the passenger side,” he mentioned.
“It escaped my notice there was actually a hole on the roof as well. I detected the scent of gunpowder, but I assumed because it was [NRL] grand final night, perhaps individuals were lighting firecrackers or the like.”
