The Liverpool legend in frame for Rangers comeback after Martin is sacked.
The former Rangers boss is under serious review for a dramatic comeback to Ibrox following the official dismissal of manager the former Southampton coach.
His unfortunate Ibrox tenure comes to a close
His unsuccessful Ibrox tenure ended with the boss departing the Falkirk's ground via a back exit and a vehicle on standby after a share of the points which left the Ibrox club 11 points from the summit of the Scottish Premiership after just seven matches.
Angry supporters had surrounded the squad transport in the away ground, making their feelings clear.
Rangers board hesitant to part with the manager
The Ibrox hierarchy had been hesitant to part with Martin, who was only hired in June, despite strong complaints from supporters.
However, there was an understanding that the coach's role had become impossible.
The team have won only one of their Premiership matches to date, which has been combined with dismal displays in European competition.
In total, the coach managed only five wins of 17 official games, with a lackluster, confused footballing philosophy that won over few admirers.
“Even though changeovers take a while, results have failed to reach the team's standards,” stated a Rangers statement on Sunday night.
“Assistant head coach Matt Gill, and senior coach the coach, will also be departing. Martin and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their tenure. We thank them for their dedication and wish them well for the next chapter.”
Gerrard won the title with the team
Gerrard claimed the league with the Glasgow club in 2020-21, their sole title since that year.
His achievements in Glasgow before then, coupled with difficulties at the Birmingham club, creates uncertainty about his leadership skills.
Yet he is held in high esteem by the very group of supporters the team urgently require back on side.
The reappointment of the former Reds star, who previously worked in Saudi Arabia, would prove hugely popular.
The coach will also be conscious of what limited opportunities he has to be a manager in major divisions.
Martin’s exit will heighten focus on Kevin Thelwell
