The State of California's Chief Executive Newsom Files Legal Action Targeting President Trump Over National Guard Deployment to Oregon

The governor of California, Gavin Newsom stated this past Sunday that he is taking legal action against Donald Trump regarding the reported deployment of three hundred California state guard personnel to the state of Oregon.

“Those forces are heading there as we speak,” the governor stated during a press announcement. “This administration is unapologetically attacking the legal system directly and putting into action their risky rhetoric – disregarding court orders and treating court officials, including those named by the President, as political opponents.”

Judicial Background and National Decision

This planned court challenge is in response to a judicial order that halted the federal government from dispatching the Oregon national guard to the city of Portland. Judge Karin Immergut upheld claims that it would intensify rather than ease conflict in the urban area.

Immergut ruled in her ruling, which delays sending the troops until at least October 18, that there was a lack of evidence that the recent protests in Portland warranted the decision.

City Authorities Respond

The senior deputy attorney, a city attorney, said that there had been an absence of violent incidents against immigration officials for an extended period and that recent Ice protests were “sedate” in the period before the national leader described the metropolis to be a conflict area, sometimes involving a small number of protesters.

“This issue goes beyond safety, it concerns authority,” Newsom said. “We will take this fight to court, but the public should speak out in the wake of such reckless and dictatorial behavior by the nation's leader.”

State Attorney General Weighs In

In a statement on X, Oregon attorney general Dan Rayfield stated that the government is reviewing possible actions and planning court proceedings.

“The administration is obviously determined on sending the armed forces in U.S. urban centers, lacking evidence or justification to do so,” he wrote. “The duty falls on us and the legal system to hold him accountable. This is our plan.”

National and State Reaction

The guard's representatives referred questions to the Department of Defense. A official representative declined to comment. There was no quick reply from the presidential administration.

National Context

The news from Oregon came just a 24 hours after Trump ordered the sending of national guard troops to the city of Chicago, the newest in a string of similar actions across multiple American states.

Trump had initially revealed the plan on 27 September, saying he was “authorizing full force, if necessary” despite requests from local leaders and the state’s congressional delegation, who reported there had been a single, uneventful rally outside a federal agency location.

Past Background

For years, Trump has emphasized the narrative that the city is a “war-ravaged” city with activists involved in disorder and illegal activities.

In his initial presidency in the year 2020, he deployed federal forces to the city amid the protests over the killing by officers of an individual in Minneapolis. The demonstrations expanded across the US but were especially heightened in Portland. Despite demonstrations against immigration officials being modest in size in the state currently, the President has cited them as a reason to deploy personnel.

Speaking on X about the latest move from Trump, the governor commented: “This is shocking. It is contrary to our principles, and action is needed to halt it.”
