United Kingdom Broadens Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Warning List with 11 Countries

Methanol alert sign

British authorities has added 11 new nations to its travel warning roster regarding the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from tainted beverages.

The expanded travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "an international surge in the incidence of reported cases" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Only last month, the government had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, following a number of high-profile cases like the deadly loss of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that as little as minimal doses of industrial alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or death within 12–48 hours.

What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Used?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic substance often utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not meant for ingestion.

While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of beverages, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the purification method.

Yet in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to cut costs, and since it is tasteless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Authorities' Advice for Travelers

Authorities representative the minister stated that every traveler should recognize the symptoms of methanol toxicity.

"When you are consuming alcohol overseas, opt for well-known venues and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the official said.
